OK, you know you're getting old and weak in the head, when the only thing you can think to say about Op.111 is oh! Beethoven's final, transcendent piano sonata! and how unworthily any lesser mere mortal may deign to publish anything in any form sporting that same opus number. Truth is, however much I may simper here about Beethoven and Bartók, the greatest help received in the composition of this piece probably came from Andrew Lloyd Webber - who confessed once in an interview that he frequently confronts difficulties with particular passages in his works, until he finallly realizes the problem is the phrasing in one or another voice. I spent the best part of two days before finalizing this composition just endlessly experimenting with different phrasings in thorny passages until finally just admitting I can probably do no better, than what is now before you.
